Shannon & Rob Black
Born in Southern California, I didn’t move to the Austin area until I was 32 years old with my husband, Rob, and 3 month old son, John, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. We LOVE living here! Texans are remarkably friendly and go out of their way to help one another, plus all the trees (beautiful) and seasons (it’s cold in the winter…woo hoo!) are a bonus. Sunrise was born when I couldn’t find a great Montessori school for my muse, John. Rob has also been influential in the success of Sunrise as well. In addition to his emotional support and laid-back nature, he is talented at fixing things (he used to help his father and grandfather make furniture and build houses) as well as designing/programming websites (the perfect spouse for a small business owner!). Although I loved being a math teacher once upon a time, I love being a business owner even more. Providing the kind of school I would want my son to attend, would like to work as a team member, or learn as a student is an indescribable and addictive joy. My sincerest wish is that all of us here at Sunrise create exactly what you want for your child, so please let us know how we can improve your experience.
Being born into a big Texas family, we always had many children at get-togethers, which is where my love for working with children began. I moved to Austin in 2008, and a few years later, I discovered the beautiful world of Montessori education, which I had never heard of before. I immediately fell in love with the philosophy! Every single lesson, from learning their letters and numbers to self-care, has a direct and indirect purpose. It is in those indirect purposes where the child is developing a skill they are not aware of. Watching the progression of a child grow more independent, self-confident and a skilled problem-solver in a Montessori environment is quite incredible. The curriculum has so many interconnecting skill sets plus it teaches children how to be a more thoughtful, caring person. I knew right away Montessori was where I needed to be, and Sunrise has been the perfect fit for me! I started out at Sunrise West as an Assistant Teacher, then earned my Montessori credential and became a Lead Teacher. Once Sunrise East opened, I applied for and was promoted to Assistant Director. After more than two years at Sunrise East, I came home to Sunrise West as their Director. Full circle! I now get to spread my passion for helping others be the best they can be across an entire campus. In my personal life, my husband, Tovah, and I are raising our two beautiful girls together in Georgetown. I am a die-hard Dallas Cowboys & Texas Rangers fan. I also enjoy spending quality time with my extended family and friends. I look forward to making your experience at Sunrise all a Montessori preschool experience should be!
Lead Montessori Teachers
I was born near Houston and spent most of my years here. In 2018 my family relocated to Hutto and I consider this my home. I have been in childcare for 8+ years and I truly enjoy this field. My daughter Courtney is like an extension of my heart and I strive to give the best care to all of my students, as I know they are your heart, too. Outside of teaching at Sunrise Montessori Preschool my husband and I own and operate our company Boxes In Action. We manufacture comic book boxes and distribute across the U.S. My hobbies are reading, gardening and comic collecting. My favorite hobby, outside of sci fi, is encouraging young minds to explore, learn, and problem solve. Thank you for trusting me with your amazing children!
Growing up in a large family, I found myself often caring for my cousins, nieces and nephews and loving it! After graduating high school, it didn’t immediately occur to me to teach. I also loved being an artist (painting, drawing), so I pursued that for a couple years, but went out of my way to work with children whenever I had the opportunity. Then someone suggested becoming a teacher, so I applied to a local preschool and found my calling. I gravitated towards the younger children especially and it wasn’t long before I was promoted to Lead of a toddler classroom, which I ran for years, and then I heard about Sunrise Montessori and their commitment to excellence, positive work culture, and fantastic families. I wanted in! I applied, was offered the only position available at the time which was an Assistant Teacher, and was able to work my way up to Lead Teacher of the Caterpillar classroom. I love this age group and the daily connections my babies make! Their look of wonder and pure joy at discovering something new, not to mention their quick development, is a true pleasure. I am grateful that I can be part of such a wonderful school and supportive families. Mark Twain once said, “Find a job you enjoy doing and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Truer words were never spoken. I look forward to meeting you and your family in the Caterpillar classroom!
I was born in Illinois and spent my younger childhood in Springfield, Maryland. When I was ten, my father relocated to Austin, so I consider Austin my home. I was very happy when my husband retired from the Navy and we relocated permanently back to the Austin area. I started working with children right out of high school as a way to pay for college. I viewed it as “just a job” in the beginning, but discovered I really enjoyed working with the younger children. I soon decided to get my CDA (Child Development) credential which I have held for the past 19 years. During my time as a navy wife and stay-at-home mom to my twin son and daughter, I continued with school and received my degree in Child Development. I have worked with all ages of children over the years and have held a variety of positions varying from Assistant Teacher to Lead Teacher and most recently, Montessori Lead. I joined Sunrise in 2012 as an Assistant in the Butterfly classroom. Once again I decided to further my education by earning my Montessori Credential. I feel that the Montessori philosophy best fits my own belief of raising children to be curious problem solvers and a member of a greater community. I look forward to this next chapter in my career by continuing to impact young lives in a Montessori setting and being part of the Sunrise Family!
Born in Ohio, but raised in Austin, I'm the second oldest of five. I spent most of my childhood with my younger siblings and believe that helped give me the best insight on how to interact with young children. As a teenager I volunteered in the Kindergarten Sunday School Class and led lessons in the children's church. I also was an Assistant Teacher at Sunrise Montessori for a year before being promoted to Lead Pre-Primary Teacher. I have the ultimate support through my fiancee, who is a Teacher with Manor ISD. We consider young children to be the most important years in a human's life and we find so much happiness providing what we can to Earth's future adults. Montessori is more than just a way of teaching, it's a way of life. I love how the Montessori curriculum encourages every child to become their best possible self through independence and helping others. Joining the Sunrise team has been amazing and this is my home away from home. Please let me know if I can ever answer any questions or make your experience in the Doodlebug classroom warmer. I am excited to get to know you and your family!
I am proud and excited to be a part of each of my students' learning journey in the Snapdragons classroom. I enjoy teaching more than anything in the world and have been teaching since 2017 as an Early Education teacher. Born in the small town of Beaumont, Texas I am a Texan girl proud and true. I love fishing, going to the lake, hunting, painting, reading, and gardening. I have lived all over the world, first traveling with my military parents and then with my husband whom is a marine veteran. We are happy to now call Round Rock our home! I earned my bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas, but teaching is where I am most fulfilled. I am a firm believer that safety, positivity, and passion are vital for a healthy classroom environment. Coupled with the Montessori curriculum and all the independence and opportunities for daily learning connections, you couldn't ask for a better environment for a young child. I love dancing, singing, and engaging with my students as much as possible. I love seeing their creativity and how their bright young minds see things. Everyday is an adventure and I'm always buckled up and ready to ride. Please let me know if I can do anything to make your child's time in our classroom a better one! Welcome to the Snapdragon classroom!
I was born in Lubbock TX and grew up in San Antonio. After meeting my husband we located to Round Rock and have made this our home for nearly 20 years. For the past 20 years I have enjoyed being a mother to a child who has become a smart, beautiful young woman. I have always found great joy in being a caregiver, helping shape young minds and teaching them. I've always gravitated towards babies and caring for them is a true joy of mine. I know that it can be difficult to ask someone to help care for your children but I take job with the utmost dedication and humbleness. Thank you for entrusting me with their care.
Born and raised here in Texas, I would often come and visit family in the Austin area and decided later in life to make it my home. The best part about living in Round Rock (according to my son) is being so close to Round Rock donuts! Having a ten year old boy means that I am often watching sports, superhero movies, Youtube and hearing non-stop about all of the fun new video games. Aside from basketball games and trips to the movies, I am in the process of earning my degree in Psychology. I’ve been working in Montessori now for 8 years and I absolutely love it! It is amazing to see what a child is capable of doing when given the opportunity to do so. The excitement and pride in their faces when they finish a challenging lesson is always such a wonderful sight to see. Along with the wonderful Montessori Method, the children are what keep me coming back. There is nothing like walking into a classroom full of loving children to tell you good morning! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s growth here at Sunrise!
