Lead Montessori Teachers

Ms. Alaya
Sweet Peas Lead Teacher
Nido, 6 weeks to 9 month olds

I was born and raised in Austin (go horns!) and come from a big family of ten. Growing up with so many siblings, we would naturally help each other. That is how I discovered my passion for children. I have worked with a variety of age groups starting from babies all the way up to fifth graders. But my favorite is infants. When my husband and I discovered Sunrise Montessori and observed a classroom in action, I knew immediately that this was the place for both my son and I! It is such an honor to be the Lead Teacher in the Sweet Pea classroom. I look forward every morning to watching your little one’s growth and seeing the connections they make in our world. I am thrilled your family is joining our Sweet Pea family!

Ms. Anna
Butterfly Lead Teacher
Primary, 3 to 6 year olds

My name is Anna Kago and I have been a teacher for over fifteen years. I attended Montessori Institute of North Texas (MINT) for my Primary Montessori certification. I also have a a Bachelor’s Degree in Design as well as a Master’s Degree of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, plus lots of experience doing what I love to do, teaching! I also enjoy spending quality time with my husband Peter, and three daughters Grace, Phyllis and Jessica. My hobbies are reading, cooking, gardening and sewing. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can make your child’s day in my classroom a better experience. I am thrilled to be here at Sunrise Montessori!

Ms. Brittany
Caterpillar Lead Teacher
Bambini, 9 to 18 month olds

Growing up in a large family, I found myself often caring for my cousins, nieces and nephews and loving it! After graduating high school, it didn’t immediately occur to me to teach. I also loved being an artist (painting, drawing), so I pursued that for a couple years, but went out of my way to work with children whenever I had the opportunity. Then someone suggested becoming a teacher, so I applied to a local preschool and found my calling. I gravitated towards the younger children especially and it wasn’t long before I was promoted to Lead of a toddler classroom, which I ran for years, and then I heard about Sunrise Montessori and their commitment to excellence, positive work culture, and fantastic families. I wanted in! I applied, was offered the only position available at the time which was an Assistant Teacher, and was able to work my way up to Lead Teacher of the Caterpillar classroom. I love this age group and the daily connections my babies make! Their look of wonder and pure joy at discovering something new, not to mention their quick development, is a true pleasure. I am grateful that I can be part of such a wonderful school and supportive families. Mark Twain once said, “Find a job you enjoy doing and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Truer words were never spoken. I look forward to meeting you and your family in the Caterpillar classroom!

Ms. Carmen
Tigerlily Lead Teacher
Primary, 3 to 6 year olds

I was born in Illinois and spent my younger childhood in Springfield, Maryland. When I was ten, my father relocated to Austin, so I consider Austin my home. I was very happy when my husband retired from the Navy and we relocated permanently back to the Austin area. I started working with children right out of high school as a way to pay for college. I viewed it as “just a job” in the beginning, but discovered I really enjoyed working with the younger children. I soon decided to get my CDA (Child Development) credential which I have held for the past 19 years. During my time as a navy wife and stay-at-home mom to my twin son and daughter, I continued with school and received my degree in Child Development. I have worked with all ages of children over the years and have held a variety of positions varying from Assistant Teacher to Lead Teacher and most recently, Montessori Lead. I joined Sunrise in 2012 as an Assistant in the Butterfly classroom. Once again I decided to further my education by earning my Montessori Credential. I feel that the Montessori philosophy best fits my own belief of raising children to be curious problem solvers and a member of a greater community. I look forward to this next chapter in my career by continuing to impact young lives in a Montessori setting and being part of the Sunrise Family!

Ms. Sabrina
Snapdragons Lead Teacher
Pre-Primary, 18 to 36 month olds

I am from the beautiful Island of Jamaica. My husband and I moved here from New York over 4 years ago and we absolutely love it here in Austin. Working with children has always been a passion of mine and I am delighted that I get to do it every day. Working at Sunrise and falling in love with the Montessori Method has completely changed the way I believe children should learn. I can’t imagine myself going back to using transitional methods of teaching. When I’m not at work loving on my Snapdragons, I’m at home loving on my husband and our son, at church, or spending some alone time working on a DIY project. If you are new to Sunrise Montessori, WELCOME! And if you are already apart of the Snapdragon family, thank you for trusting and allowing me to be a part of your child’s life and learning experience. Please let me know if you ever have any questions!

Ms. Stefanie
Dandelions Lead Teacher
Primary, 3 to 6 year olds

Born and raised here in Texas, I would often come and visit family in the Austin area and decided later in life to make it my home. The best part about living in Round Rock (according to my son) is being so close to Round Rock donuts! Having a ten year old boy means that I am often watching sports, superhero movies, you-tube and hearing non-stop about all of the fun new video games. Aside from basketball games and trips to the movies, I am in the process of earning my degree in Psychology.

I’ve been working in Montessori now for 8 years and I absolutely love it! It is amazing to see what a child is capable of doing when given the opportunity to do so. The excitement and pride in their faces when they finish a challenging lesson is always such a wonderful sight to see. Along with the wonderful Montessori Method, the children are what keep me coming back. There is nothing like walking into a classroom full of loving children to tell you good morning! Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s growth here at Sunrise!

Ms. Taylor
Doodlebug Lead Teacher
Pre-Primary, 18 to 36 month olds

Being the oldest of four children was the greatest gift I could have asked for. It inspired me to want to work with younger children! Having a child now myself, I have the best of both worlds: perspective on both sides. My first job six years ago was in child care, but I consider my experience to be much longer than that since I helped my mom so much growing up with my siblings…on the job training! I chose to work at Sunrise because it is a Montessori school. Allowing the children to make discoveries on their own, to have freedom in the classroom to choose their own work and display that independence for their learning every day is a beautiful and exciting thing to see. When I’m not working with your children to make those daily connections, I enjoy spending time with my fiancee (high school sweetheart!) and daughter and baking. I look forward to helping your children feel loved in our classroom and helping them to see how the world works around them to be the best person they can be!

Ms. Jessica, Director

I am so excited to have found Sunrise Montessori Preschool and happy to join the team! I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and 10 years of experience working with children and 9 years in the Early Childhood Education field, in the classroom as well as in administration. Helping other families in their journey of parenthood and the planning of their child’s education is a fantastic feeling.

My husband and I have two sons and a daughter, and we love being able to share this amazing environment with them. I am a Texas native, born in Midland-Odessa. I come from what I consider a big family, one of five children, so I’m used to a busy lifestyle and lots of interactions. I’m always on the move and I love working with and helping people in any way I can. I enjoy crafting, mostly scrapbooking, as well as sketching, and photography.

I can’t wait to get to know you and your family, so please feel free to ask me any questions that you might have!

Ms. Karima, Assistant Director

I was born and raised on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. I moved to the USA in 1988 and lived in NY for some years and then moved to London and lived there for three years before moving to Austin in 1999. Austin is now home for me, my daughter, and our dog, Bounce. My daughter, whom I am very proud of, is now a lawyer. She was the main reason for my passion to teach and be with children. Before coming to Sunrise I worked with a childcare center for ten years where I wore many hats. I was the Pre-K teacher and also trained the teachers on curriculum and classroom management. I have my CDA credentials and also my Montessori Teaching Diploma. I joined Sunrise in August 2010, and I look forward to being a positive role model for your child and making a difference in their lives. In the words of Dostoyevski, “The soul is healed by being with children.”

Ms. Shannon, Owner

Born in Southern California, I didn’t move to the Austin area until I was 32 years old with my husband, Rob, and 3 month old son, John, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. We LOVE living here! Texans are remarkably friendly and go out of their way to help one another, plus all the trees (beautiful) and seasons (it’s cold in the winter…woo hoo!) are a bonus. Sunrise was born when I couldn’t find a great Montessori school for my muse, John. Rob has also been influential in the success of Sunrise as well. In addition to his emotional support and laid-back nature, he is talented at fixing things (he used to help his father and grandfather make furniture and build houses) as well as designing/programming websites (the perfect spouse for a small business owner!). Although I loved being a math teacher once upon a time, I love being a business owner even more. Providing the kind of school I would want my son to attend, would like to work as a staff member, or learn as a student is an indescribable and addictive joy. My sincerest wish is that all of us here at Sunrise create exactly what you want for your child, so please let us know how we can improve your experience.
