You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down. —Mary Pickford
For school districts in our area, the first day of school is upon us. An exciting time of year! There are changes at our school, Sunrise Montessori, too. For example, we have a new Director at Sunrise West, Ms. Samantha Dutton. (That faint sound you hear coming from Sunrise East is the soft wailing of families in mourning who no longer have the super upbeat Ms. Samantha as their Assistant Director. We have elementary children starting distance learning with us for the first time. And construction for our additional 7 classrooms at Sunrise East looks like it will be done and ready to open now October 1st.
What do all of these things have in common? Change. The ending of one chapter, the beginning of another. We’ve had SO much change these past few months though that ANY change can seem like something you need to protect yourself from (sort of like the shields that the Enterprise throws up when encountering a new ship that’s not responding to their hail, but I digress). Or maybe your version of Change is the anticipation of failure or stress, something dark and scary. Do you see Change as a Star Wars character like Darth Vader, all dressed in black and breathing like he needs an asthma treatment? Are you tired of the drama and theatrics and your adrenals on red alert? I’m really done, too. I’d much rather redress Change in white, flowing robes so that I can stop putting on the heavy armor I use to thwart an imminent attack. It’s so much less intimidating to see someone in that kind of outfit, don’t you think? So much more practical in this ridiculous Texas heat.
I remind myself often that Change isn’t bad, it’s just the acceptance of a rewrite in my brain’s template. But what about your child having to learn from a computer? Or hearing some new tidbit about the State of our _______ (economy, Covid cases, insert at will). Or something unimportant like the reopening of movie theaters? (Yes, I am still bitter about being denied Wonder Woman AND Tenet this summer.) You may be tired of the multiple alterations of your template of Life (I know I could use a break), but Change is demanding to be let out to do its business, like a new puppy. I feel sort of sorry for Change. It keeps coming around, so it’s gotten a bad rap lately. I propose a toast. Let’s rebrand Change as the Bringer of New Beginnings!
As I will challenge myself, I challenge you to embrace the positives of YOUR “fresh starts” this coming week. Instead of seeing what’s missing or a potential looming failure or just something new to react to, give Change a chance and see it for its possibilities…along with a hearty welcome. After all, like us, The Bringer of New Beginnings needs a hug sometimes, too.
